Field Notes
Shooting at Aera Toronto.
Aera sits on the 38th floor of CIBC Square, and the room does most of my work for me. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap the dining space, so a clear afternoon fills it with soft city sun. There is a cloud mural painted across the ceiling, and below it one long family-style table that anchors the whole evening.
The shot I go for first is the arched corridor with the mirror at the far end. I pull couples there within thirty minutes of the ceremony, before anyone wanders into the hallway with a phone. A bride in a veil walking toward that mirror needs almost no direction from me.
The light has a clear cycle. Mid-afternoon is the most forgiving, with soft side light through the south-facing glass. I try to get the ceremony to end about forty-five minutes before sunset. That sets up skyline portraits at the windows, then the twenty minutes after sunset when the city lights up while the room still holds candlelight. That stretch is the rarest light the venue offers.
At Grace and Giovanni's wedding the day opened with a tea ceremony by the windows. Grace held the cup with both hands in front of her grandmother while the afternoon light caught the side of her face. By dinner, candle runners ran the length of the long table and the skyline glittered behind the toasts. Late in the meal I pulled them to a quiet corner of the windows for one blue-hour frame.
Practical notes: it is a private restaurant, so photography is arranged with the venue, no city permit. Elevator to the 38th floor. Fully indoors, so rain never moves the schedule.
