Dundurn Castle

Dundurn does most of the work for me. It is an 1830s Italianate villa on a rise above Hamilton Harbour, and the columned portico is the frame everyone comes for. I usually start there, then walk couples up the tree-lined drive. With the sun behind them at golden hour, the allee gives you a natural leading line and that European estate feeling in a single frame. The light is best in late afternoon, when the stone goes warm and the columns gain depth.

The parkland matters more than people expect. Old trees and wide grass, the house small in the distance. In early spring and late fall the branches are bare and the grounds read like an old English estate. Summer brings the full canopy. It works in every season.

Vikrant and Sahib drove in from out of town for a single afternoon, both in head-to-toe black against the pale stone. The castle gave the day a grand, quiet first act before the session softened into the Burlington lakefront. Roxanne and Justin closed their wedding here after their ceremony at St. Patrick's, walking the allee with yellow petals across the path, Roxanne glancing back over her shoulder mid-step.

A few practical notes. Parking is free on site at 610 York Boulevard. Groups under ten shoot permit-free on the grounds, and ten or more needs a City of Hamilton permit at 218 dollars. The grounds are flat and easy to walk, with a few steps at the main entrance. From downtown Toronto, plan on 60 to 70 minutes on the QEW.
