Field Notes
Shooting at Toronto Music Garden.
The Music Garden is small, and that is exactly why I keep bringing couples here. The garden is laid out in sections inspired by Bach's music, and each section has its own character. Winding paths give way to ornamental grasses, then granite pillars, then the trees open and you are at the waterfront with the downtown towers behind you. I can get a dozen different looks without asking a couple to walk more than a few minutes.
Timing matters here. Early weekday mornings are the quiet window. Weekend mornings work too, but visitors start arriving around 10am, so I shoot the open waterfront first and save the hedge maze for later. That maze is my favourite corner for close-ups. The hedges wrap around a couple and the city disappears for a frame or two.
Harsh and Bhayva's session started at Blue Mountain that morning, so the Music Garden became the city half of their day, softer afternoon light, new outfits. There is a black and white frame from that session I keep coming back to. The two of them tucked behind one of the granite pillars, laughing about something I will never know. Later, on the curb at Queens Quay, a streetcar crossed in motion blur while they stood perfectly still. That is what this place gives you, a quiet pocket of green with the whole city moving right past it.
Practical bits: no permit needed for photo sessions, parking is a two minute walk away, and the paths are manageable with a few hills. Spring through fall is the season.
