Field Notes

Shooting at Osgoode Hall.

Osgoode Hall is my favourite stop on the downtown loop. It sits a five minute walk west of City Hall on Queen Street, behind wrought iron gates that were built to keep cattle out. Step through them and the plaza noise drops away. After the busy square, this is the quiet green chapter.

I work it in an order. Gardens first, while the courtyards still hold their shade. Then the Palladian columns on the south face. Then back to the iron gates and the warm brick corridor, which frame a couple better than almost anything downtown. Late morning through mid afternoon is my window. The grounds stay calm even when Nathan Phillips Square is packed.

I photographed Sonia and Achyut here after their City Hall ceremony. Old City Hall was the theatrical half of their afternoon. Osgoode was the hushed one. I saved the gates for last, at golden hour, the final stop of their walk.

Practical notes. The grounds belong to the Law Society of Ontario, not the City, so a Toronto photo permit does not cover them. Ask for permission in advance, and know access is sometimes limited during construction or court events. Parking means paid lots nearby on Queen, with limited street spots. The walking is easy, flat lawns and paths with courtyard access. And come spring through fall. This place is about the green.
