Field Notes

Shooting at Adamson Estate.

Adamson Estate is the quietest place I shoot in the GTA. It sits behind a low stone wall on a residential street in Lakeview, Mississauga, and once you walk through the gate the traffic noise just stops. Wind off the lake, the odd gull, and a 1919 stone manor that does most of the compositional work for me.

I work the grounds in a loop. The lakefront terrace first, because the bounce light coming off the water is strongest in the last two hours before sunset and fills faces with almost no harsh shadow. Then the brick courtyards behind the house, where the patterned walls and one deep archway give me three different backdrops within twenty feet. If there is energy left, the wooded path on the east side filters the light into long beams in late spring and fall.

I photographed Ayushi and Parth's pre-wedding session here on a clear afternoon. Ayushi wore a cream lehenga that caught every bit of that bounced lake light, Parth was in deep charcoal, and the session ended on the lakefront as the wind picked up and the light went the soft amber that only happens between 7:45 and 8:15 in early summer. I let them stand still and let the lake do the rest.

Practical notes. The City of Mississauga asks for a commercial photography permit for professional shoots, so call 905-615-4100 before you book. Parking is a free lot on site, small, so arrive early on weekends. The grounds are flat with ramp access to the house. Shoot it May through October. Skip winter, the wind off the lake is brutal.
