Field Notes

Shooting at Humber Bay Arch Bridge.

Most couples find this bridge on their phones before they find me. The draw is the arch itself, a big modern curve over the water that works like a ready-made frame. The span runs about 140 metres, which is more room than the photos suggest, so even on a busy evening I can usually find a quiet stretch of railing.

Sunset is when I book it. The light comes in low across the lake, and the downtown skyline sits in the background catching the last warm colour. I put the couple mid-span first, framed by the structure, then move down to the waterfront path for wider frames with the whole arch behind them.

For sunrise I flip the plan. I start at the pond in Humber Bay Park East, where the sun comes up behind and to the right of the CN Tower, and on a calm morning the glass towers reflect in the pond. Then we make the short walk over to the bridge for a second backdrop in the same session.

The practical stuff is easy here. Parking is free in the lots at Humber Bay Park East and West. The paths are flat, so heels survive. The city does require a commercial photography permit for professional shoots, and I handle that before the session. I shoot it spring through fall, and it sits twenty minutes from downtown, which is hard to believe once you are standing over the water.
