Field Notes
Shooting at RC Harris Water Treatment Center.
RC Harris is the location I keep coming back to. It is a 1930s Art Deco waterworks above Lake Ontario, limestone towers and tiered stone staircases, with open lawns running down to a rocky shoreline. Locals call it the Palace of Purification. Stand a couple in front of that stone and the picture is half built before anyone moves.
I usually start at the main facade, then work down the staircases to the iron-railing walkway along the lake edge. There are heavy heritage doors painted deep green set into the stone, small details that read rich on camera. Below the lawns the ground turns to rock and open water, the wild counterpoint to all that polished limestone.
Golden hour is the reason to book it. The ninety minutes before sunset make the stone glow and the lake go silver. Early morning is a close second, and the grounds are at their quietest then.
The wind off the lake sounds like a problem and is actually a gift. One September session, Shuba and Rob showed up with zero agenda, just comfortable clothes and real ease with each other. Within five minutes they were laughing hard enough that I almost missed the first frame, and the wind kept catching Shuba's hair at exactly the right moment. I barely directed them. The lake set the pace.
Practical notes: you do not need a permit for a photo session here, street parking is free until 4pm, and there are stairs between the spots, so wear shoes you can walk in. It is twenty to thirty minutes from downtown.
